EPSC 2020 goes live for schools

For the first time, the Europlanet Science Congress (EPSC) 2020, a scientific conference on planetary science, is opening its doors to schools and will give students a glimpse of how contemporary science is done.

Teachers and students are kindly invited to join us virtually with their classroom or educational institute (suggested age range 12-18 years old or older).

Events:

1. List of scientific talks with plain language summary (available on-demand video)
2. Every week a Q&Α session with one of the experts will be broadcasted live, and the students will have the opportunity to pose questions to them.
3. Supporting workshops will be organised by both experienced and young researchers on introductory topics, targeted at students who wish to learn more about e.g.:
- How we calculate the Age of the Earth
- A trip to Antarctica to chase meteorites
- Our solar system and its weird cousins
- What is “Astrobiology”?
- “Anatomy” of a Scientific talk (students vote their favourite scientific talk)

These activities are kindly being organised by the researchers of Lecturers without Borders, the Europlanet Early Career (EPEC) Network and the Diversity Committee of the Europlanet Society.

#PlanetaryScience4All EPEC-EPSC 4-minute video contest: Call for PhD students

Calling all PhD students – showcase your research in #PlanetaryScience4All video contest

The Europlanet Early Career (EPEC) Communication working group is giving all PhD students involved in planetary science the

opportunity to showcase their research through a 4-minute video contest called #PlanetaryScience4All.

The deadline for submissions is 31 August 2020.

The winner of the competition will receive a free registration for EPSC 2021, which will be held Helsinki, Finland, from 19-24 September

2021. The winning video will be also shared via the Europlanet website.

Europlanet call for funding opportunities to

support Society Committees and Memberships

A call is open for proposals by our members asking funds for activities within the regional hubs.

The scheme is designed to support projects with funds of between 1000-5000 €. The proposals should further the aims of the

Europlanet Society and actively involve Society members.

Guidelines prepared by ESF and the template for proposals are provided here below.

The proposal must then be sent to the Benelux hub which centralizes all these proposals.

The hub ranks the proposal and introduces the selected ones into the online form of the Europlanet society . All proposals will then be collected and discussed by the Executive Board for the final selection of the best projects to be funded.

Europlanet 2020 Call for free access to field sites and laboratories

Europlanet 2024 RI’s Transnational Access (TA) programme enables European researchers to visit 24 distributed laboratory facilities in

Europe five planetary analogue field sites around the world.

The TA programme supports all travel and local accommodation costs of European and international researchers in order to conduct their research in accredited facilities and field sites.

Applicants can submit proposals to the TA programme through annual calls. Anonymised proposals will be evaluated by a peer review process managed by the European Science Foundation independent of the Europlanet 2024 RI participants.

Call for speakers to take part in Soapbox Science’s 2020 events (deadline 2nd of March 2020 10 am)

Soapbox Science is a public outreach platform for promoting women scientists and the science they do. Our events around the world transform public areas into an arena for public learning and scientific debate. Are you a woman* who works in science and who is passionate about your research? Are you eager to talk to the general public about your work in a fun, informal setting? No middle man, no PowerPoint slide, no amphitheatre – just remarkable scientists who are there to amaze with their latest discoveries, and to answer the science questions the public have been burning to ask.

Submission open for ESA' s Moon Camp Discovery

This is the beginners level of the Moon Camp Challenge. Become a space engineer and take part in the future of Moon exploration by designing one component of a Moon base. The teams can submit their Moon Camp Discovery project until 31st January 2020.

Europlanet’s #InspiredByOtherWorlds arts contest

The Europlanet Society Congress 2020 (#EPSC2020) is inviting

schools and space enthusiasts of all ages to get creative and share

their artworks and performances inspired by other worlds. Entries will be

showcased in a virtual exhibition and highlighted during a dedicated

session during #EPSC2020.

All artworks should be uploaded to submitted via the entry form.
The deadline is 30 September 2020.

Applications can be submitted by any of the Society’s Regional Hubs, Committees (EPEC, Diversity) or Working Groups in support of their activities or those of the Society Membership.

Funds for each project between €1000-5000 are considered.

Members of the Society may approach their Regional Hub (or any of the other Committees) with suggestions for projects, which may be submitted on their behalf.

Universities are called to apply for the 2020 Concurrent Engineering Challenge

ESA is looking for three universities from ESA Member States which would like to participate with their students in the fourth ESA Academy Concurrent Engineering Challenge.

This Challenge will be organised by the ESA Education Office in collaboration with ESA’s Systems and Concurrent Engineering Section. The event will last five days, from 8:30 to 18:30 CET and take place during the last quarter of 2020 depending on the availability of the selected universities.

The ESA Academy Concurrent Engineering Challenge 2020 will feature four groups of 20-30 University students at Master or PhD level. A first group will be selected, at a later stage, by ESA to participate from ESA Academy’s Training and Learning Facility. The three others groups will be identified by the universities after summer and will participate from their respective Concurrent Engineering Facilities (CEFs).

Each group will be supervised by two local systems engineers and will be given, at the start of the Challenge, the same space mission to design within five days. Students in each group will be divided into small teams of two or three to cover the following disciplines:

structures,
configuration,
power,
mechanisms,
thermal,
attitude and orbit control,
propulsion,
trajectory analysis,
communications and data handling.

Students within each small team will design their subsystem using the Concurrent Engineering approach with the objective of complying with the mission requirements and prove feasibility.
